M.S. in Health Sciences, Dietetics concentration

A Master of Science degree may be pursued with a major in health sciences and a concentration in dietetics. The entire program is completed online with no requirement for on-campus attendance.  It includes 33 to 34 hours of coursework in advanced nutrition, current trends in foods, management, and research methods, in addition to electives. Tuition information can be found at http://www.jmu.edu/ubo/. All students must plan and conduct a research project.  Students may choose to write their research manuscript as either a directed research paper, which is written as a journal article using guidelines required by professional scientific journals, or in the traditional thesis format.  The research component can be completed in a variety of ways, including evidence analysis, research related to worksite issues, or traditional laboratory research.  Students who wish to apply for this program must have the RD credential to be granted admission to the program and enrollment in classes.  Application deadlines are as follows: January 15 for summer semester; February 15 for fall semester; or September 15 for spring semester. The application is completed online at https://www.applyweb.com/apply/jmug/index.html.  Students will be notified regarding acceptance approximately a month after the application deadline. Application to the program includes submission of online application form, 3 letters of recommendation, a personal statement of intent, transcripts, GRE scores, and a copy of the RD card. Requirements for online classes include having reliable internet access, a headset (which includes microphone and headphones), and webcam. The program is designed for students with undergraduate degrees in dietetics, kinesiology, or a related area. Courses in nutrition, exercise physiology, human anatomy and physiology are prerequisites for admission. Students enrolled in this program must declare a major in either Kinesiology or Health Sciences/Dietetics with a concentration in Nutrition and Physical Activity, and will be assigned an advisor in both departments. Although this program does not lead to the RD (Registered Dietitian) status by the American Dietetic Association, students may obtain this status by completing additional requirements.
