Every day new information is uncovered concerning food and how it affects the body. However, much is yet to be discovered in dietetics such as the relationship of foods, nutrients, and phytochemicals to cancer, heart disease, and body fitness. Development of new food products occurs rapidly and continuously.

People who are fascinated with the way the human body works and metabolizes food, and who like to work with food as well as to help people, will find dietetics a very satisfying career. Dietetics professionals help people learn about food, nutrition and smart food choices to keep them healthy and provide medical nutrition therapy. (MNT).

The dietetics curriculum reflects a commitment to preparing students to become involved and stay current in their chosen field; it follows guidelines and requirements set by the American Dietetic Association (ADA). The student's experience in dietetics at JMU will be exciting and challenging. Small class sizes allow students and professors to get to know one another. Faculty are involved in dietetics professional organizations and encourage student involvement. Students are also encouraged to become involved with faculty research.
