Dietetic Internship Practice Sites Students completing the dietetic internship will spend six months in their practicum at one of the following locations affiliated with the James Madison University combined Masters of Science and Dietetic Internship Program. Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Hampton, VA Hampton VA Medical Center, located in Tidewater Virginia, the most populous area in the state with a combined population of over 1.5 million, treats patients from the southeastern part of Virginia and the northeastern part of North Carolina. The facility is located on an 85-acre site at the Hampton Roads Tunnel on I-64 exit #268 between Richmond and Virginia Beach. It is the fourth oldest facility in the system established just after the Civil War (in 1870) as a National Home for Volunteer Soldiers and Sailors. The facility is affiliated with Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk and provides training for about 45 resident physicians plus nearly 100 medical students each year. Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, WV The Martinsburg VAMC is a 99-bed primary and secondary care facility, providing medical, surgical, and psychiatric services. Long-term care is provided in a 148-bed Nursing Home Care Unit and 312-bed Domiciliary. A full range of medical, surgical, and psychiatric outpatient services are offered. Patient care is provided through an integrated primary care concept, and each veteran is assigned to a team of health care providers that follows the patient's care both as an inpatient and an outpatient. Community-based outpatient clinics are located in Cumberland and Hagerstown, Maryland and Stephens City, Virginia. Contract clinics are located in Harrisonburg, VA, and Petersburg and Franklin, WV. The medical center has a service area of 110,000 veterans in West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. In addition to affiliations in ophthalmology and dental, the medical center provides training opportunities for over 200 students from more than 25 allied health programs from 12 colleges, universities, and professional schools. Sentara Healthcare, Norfolk, VA Sentara is the largest integrated health care provider in southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina serving more than 2 million residents. Students will complete the majority of the internship at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital (SNGH) in Norfolk, VA but will have the opportunity to complete competencies at sites within the system. SNGH is a 569-bed tertiary care facility, Level 1 Trauma Center and burn trauma unit. SNGH is located next to Eastern Virginia Medical School and Children's Hospital of the Kings Daughters. |
